Ducati 899 Panigale

The experts from Auto Trader Bikes have ridden hundreds of miles, testing every new bike on sale in the UK to pick these category winners and name the Best Bike of 2014.

The Panigale’s frameless formula was genuinely revolutionary when revealed at the 2011 Milan Show, but this year’s addition of the super-middleweight 899 has given the Ducati access to this technology in a more sensibly priced, and road-friendly package. Unusually for an Italian superbike, it also has great ergonomics, a full electronics pack and long service intervals.

“In many ways, the 899 is a better road bike than the more powerful and more expensive 1199 Panigale.”

Runner-up: Honda Fireblade SP

The ultimate Fireblade complete with Öhlins suspension, Brembo monobloc brakes and blueprinted engine. Hugely desirable.

Runner-up: BMW S1000RR

Searing performance, amazing throttle response and rider modes. For us, it remains the litre-capacity bike to beat.
